“How is he?” I asked Colm who was checking the bite wound on Mr. Briggs. Briggs’ body. Briggs was now being magically levitated on a stretcher instead of sprawled uncomfortably on the stairs. The stairs below him were clean of blood and Brigg’s bloody shirt was gone completely, and his pants he was (thankfully) still wearing showed no signs of the gruesome scene only a short while earlier.

“He’ll be grand, as soon as we git a bit more blood back into ‘im. Don’t you be worryin’ yer pretty, wee head now.” He said the last bit with a saucy wink at me, and I instantly felt my traitorous blood vessels start to make me blush again.

Darn it! Why did this guy affect me like this?! Umm… because he was gorgeous and had a sexy accent and was a flirt beyond measure. Duh.

“Did ye catch the beast that did this to ‘im?”

“No. I’m hoping Kieron caught something on video. It was gone by the time I got to the roof.”

“Ah,” Colm said with a waggle of his eyebrows, “so you be datin’ the young Kieron, are ya?”

“No,” I said quickly—probably too quickly—“I’m not dating the young Kieron or the old Kieron or any Kieron, for that matter.”

“Good,” he said simply as he signaled for his colleagues to take Mr. Briggs up to the roof—I assumed to materialize him back to the Consortium to ensure he fully healed.

“Good?” OK I was confused. And in my confusion, the question spurted out of my mouth.

“Yeah, it wouldn’t be very kindly of me to be askin’ out another fella’s girl now, would it?”

Wait. What?

“Uhhh… no. I suppose it wouldn’t.”

“Now,” he said stepping closer to me.

He smelled like sunshine and rain swirled into one. It was like a sun shower on gorgeous grassy knoll. The kind that takes you by surprise and makes you laugh and twirl around in it.

I could once again see that light smattering of freckles dotted across his nose. They were so adorable. I wanted to smile, but my face seemed to be frozen. In fact, my whole body seemed to be frozen except my heart, which was hammering so loudly in my chest I knew he could hear it. “Perhaps ye would do me the honor of lettin’ me buy you dinner tonight?”

“I… I…” I stammered. Tonight? Yes! But no. I had a zombie. I couldn’t take time off for a dinner date, no matter how amazing his eyes were. No matter how much I wanted to lean up on my tiptoes and kiss those perfect lips. No, I just couldn’t.

“I know a place,” he said as he reached out and placed his hands on my upper arms. Every nerve ending in my body went on high alert. His hands were warm, and he touched me firmly but gently—showing his strength but also his reserve. “Went to it with some mates a few weeks ago. The craic was ninety.”

Craic? Ninety? I didn’t know what he was saying but if it meant he was going to keep touching me…

The buzz of my phone broke the spell.
